General Overview
West Point Grey is an upscale area, located near the University of British Columbia, that offers beach-front living, great views and a strong sense of community. Most of West Point Grey is zoned for housing. There are clusters of low- and high-rise apartments west of Alma Street from 5th to 8th Avenues, as well as on 4th and 10th Avenues. of West Point Grey Parks A total of 36.4 hectares (90 acres), which includes portions of Jericho Park, Locarno Beach and Spanish Banks, are designated for regional use. Community park space encompasses 41.58 hectares (103 acres). West Point Grey has 3.27 hectares of park land per 1,000 persons, compared to the city average of 1.12 hectares per 1,000 persons. Despite the apparent abundance, the majority of park land (95%) is north of 4th Avenue, while the majority of residents live south of 8th Avenue. The area's east-west traffic arterials and the steep hills leading to the beach parks make pedestrian access difficult for residents living in the southern part of West Point Grey. Hastings Mill Park Alma Street and Point Grey Road. This waterfront park, with its spectacular water and mountain views (located next to the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club), is the site o the old Hastings Mill Store. The park has a small playground, shaded picnic tables, and is a great spot for frisbee throwing or kite flying. Jericho Beach Park (Falaise Ave. and Worthington Drive, Grandview Highway) This 7.67 hectare park has an extensive system of fields available for recreation of all kinds. The park has four baseball and one football field, as well as three playgrounds. Renfrew (Discovery Street and 4th Avenue, West of Wallace) One of Vancouver's gems, this park is home to the annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival (in July). The ponds, mature shade trees, and natural areas have also made it a favourite haunt of local bird-watchers. The sandy beach on English Bay is great for swimming, and the Seaside Bicycle Route connects the beach to Locarno and Spanish Banks Beaches to the west. The park is also the home of the Jericho Sailing Centre for small-boat sailing and windsurfing. Next to the Sailing Centre is the Jericho Youth Hostel (a converted military barrack), tennis courts and a rugby field. Locarno and Spanish Banks Beaches (waterfront West of Discovery Street) Locarno and Spanish Banks Beaches (west of Jericho Beach) are popular year-round for spectacular views of the Coast Range Mountains, Lighthouse Park, Stanley Park and the West End. Both are popular summertime destinations for walking, family picnics, swimming and sunbathing. West Point Grey Park (8th Avenue and Trimble Street) Night or day, West Point Grey Park is one of the city's most spectacular viewpoints. Home to the West Point Grey Lawn Bowling Club, West Point Grey Park is also developed for tennis, softball, basketball, soccer and field hockey. Schools The are two elementary schools (kindergarten to grade 7) and Lord Byng Secondary School.
