Map of East/West Vancouver

BC, Lower MainlandKitsilano, named in 1905 for Squamish Chief of Khahtsahlanough, is one of 23 communities in Vancouver. It stretches from the English Bay waterfront to 16th Avenue, and from Burrard to Alma Street. These boundaries are defined by the city or planning and administrative purposes and may not accurately reflect smaller, historical neighbourhoods.

Kitsilano is known for its young, active population; beaches and mountain views; and shopping, restaurants and services.

People of Kitsilano
While Kitsilano's total population has remained relatively constant since the early 1970s, the community mix has changed. Such changes in the composition of the community affect the demand for housing, health care and community facilities such as schools, recreation centres and parks.

Kits residents live in a variety of housing types, from high- and low-rise apartments to duplexes, converted houses and single-family dwellings.

Parks

All residents are within a comfortable walk (800 metres) of one of 9 community parks. Residents north of Broadway are 800 metres from the English Bay shoreline. Kits has 0.82 hectares of park land per 1,000 persons as compared to the city average of 1.12.

Kits Beach (waterfront from Trafalgar to Maple) Kitsilano's major waterfront park offers Vancouver's largest outdoor pool, tennis, beach volleyball and windsurfing which draw people from all over the city. The Kitsilano Showboat has been a summer tradition since 1935, with amateur groups performing on the outdoor stage when weather permits.

Connaught (Larch and Vine Streets) The largest non-waterfront park in Kits, Connaught is used for field sports and is also the site of the Kitsilano Community Centre and Ice Rink.

Vanier Park (waterfront from Chestnut to Maple)
Vanier Park's
grassy slopes are popular year round for great kite-flying and views of ocean traffic. It also hosts the annual Vancouver Children's Festival in May and Bard on the Beach, Shakespeare on an open-air stage through July and August. Other facilities on site include The Vancouver Museum, Burrard Marina and boat launch, Maritime Museum and Planetarium.

Tatlow (Point Grey Road and MacDonald) One of the city's oldest parks, with mature trees and tennis courts; this was the 1969 location for one of the first movies made in Vancouver: Robert Altman's That Cold Day in the Park.

Six Street-End Waterfront Parks
Small parks with trees and benches -- a few lots wide -- are scattered along the English Bay waterfront with access from Point Grey Road. Street-end parks at Dunbar, Waterloo and Trafalgar all have stairs down to the shoreline.

Schools
There are 4 elementary schools (kindergarten to grade 7) and Kitsilano Secondary School. Two independent schools are also located in this district.
