General Overview
Kerrisdale is a mature suburban community which has a thriving commercial centre, a mix of low- and high-rise apartments, and mostly single-family dwellings on tree-lined streets. People
of Kerrisdale Kerrisdale residents live in a variety of housing types, from high- and low-rise apartments, to single-family homes. The area bounded by 41st and 44th Avenues, West Boulevard and Larch Street is mainly apartment-style buildings (both rental and condominium), while the rest of the neighbourhood is mostly single-family in nature. In 1988/ 89, both Kerrisdale and Arbutus Ridge lost a number of low-rise rental apartments to demolition and redevelopment as condominiums. Residential development in the Kerrisdale portion of Southlands has taken place in two areas: the top of the escarpment along Southwest Marine Drive and the Blenheim Flats area. Homes on the south side of Southwest Marine Drive (an area bounded by Carnarvon, Angus and Southwest Marine) are large, well-maintained estates with an average site area of approximately .4 hectares (1 acre). Blenheim Flats is the principal residential and equestrian activity centre of Southlands. Homes in the Flats range from small, older bungalows to large, estate-style homes. Most homes sit on parcels of .9 hectares (2.25 acres), giving this area a unique rural atmosphere. Parks Seventeen hectares of parks land are distributed throughout Kerrisdale with most residents only a few blocks (800 metres) from one of the area's seven parks. Only residents in the northeast are not within a comfortable walking distance from a local park. Kerrisdale has 1.26 hectares of park land per 1,000 persons, as compared to the city average of 1.12. Centennial (42nd Avenue and West Boulevard) Elm (41st Avenue and Larch Street) This busy little park is developed for field sports such as baseball and soccer and is home to the Kerrisdale Lawn Bowling Club. Fraser River
(75th Avenue and Angus Drive) Maple Grove (pool) on Yew Street, 51st Avenue and Marine Drive. This attractive park is a family destination for its picnic area, playground and wading pool, horseshoes, soccer and softball. The park was the site of the city's first recreation program for blind children in 1960. There are three elementary schools (kindergarten to grade 7). Secondary schools are: Magee Secondary School on West 49th Avenue and Point Grey Secondary School, located on East Boulevard (the boundary between Arbutus Ridge and Shaughnessy).
