General Overview

  • Population of approximately 24,231
  • Map of East/West Vancouver

BC, Lower MainlandFairview, which includes False Creek, Fairview Slopes, Burrard Slopes and Fairview Heights, is one of 23 communities in Vancouver. It stretches from Burrard Street to Cambie Street, and from 16th Avenue to False Creek. These boundaries are defined by the city for planning and administrative purposes and may not accurately reflect smaller historical neighbourhoods.

The last two decades have seen Fairview transformed from an industrial precinct fronting False Creek, to a family-oriented, inner-city neighbourhood offering waterfront living in the heart of the city. Vancouver General Hospital is also located within blocks of this neighbourhood.

The are two elementary schools (kindergarten to grade 7) and an independent school, providing elementary level French immersion instruction.

The Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design on Granville Island has a sizable enrolment.

The number of single-detached houses has been decreasing in Fairview since the 1940s, initially replaced by industries and later by apartments. Today, the majority of Fairview residents live in apartment-style accommodation; mostly rental units south of Broadway to 16th Avenue, condominiums in Fairview Slopes and a mix of co-op, nonprofit rental, market rental and condominiums in False Creek. 1800 of the units in South False Creek are on land leased from the city. False Creek's Sea Village provides legal moorage for 12 floating homes and 85 live-aboards (60 in Spruce Harbour and 25 in Heather Harbour).

    People of Fairview
The redevelopment of Fairview Slopes, False Creek and Fairview Heights in the 1970s and 1980s drew many new residents to the area. Such changes in the community affect the demand for housing, health care, and community facilities such as schools, recreation facilities and parks.

    Park
Ten hectares of park land are distributed among Fairview's four parks. Fairview has 0.42 hectares of park land per 1,000 persons as compared to the city average of 1.12.

Outside of False Creek, which has Charleson and Sutcliffe parks, the balance of the Fairview area has little park space. In Fairview Slopes there are two small pocket parks, Choklit Park and the 7th and Willow Park. Sixth Avenue physically separates most residents from the Creek's park and seawall amenities.

The Laurel land bridge provides the only unrestricted pedestrian and bicycle access. Many Slopes residents, benefit from "fair views" across the Creek towards the mountains.

Charleson Park on 6th Avenue and Laurel Street
Fairview's largest park is a lushly landscaped green space complete with waterfall and a resident duck population. Charleson contains the neighbourhood's only playing field and is a pleasant location for summertime picnics.

Sutcliffe Park is on the south end of Granville Island
Upcoming renovations to the children's play equipment will be guided by resident suggestions concerning safety and the retention of green space.

False Creek Water Playground on Granville Island
A unique summertime water facility for children built with industrial artifacts from Granville Island's previous incarnation.

Granville Park (Burrard, Fir and Pine streets, 14th & 15th Avenue) This busy park is home to the Terminal City Lawn Bowling Club and is popular for its tennis courts and children's playground.

Choklit Park on 7th Avenue and Spruce Street. This tiny street-end park provides Slopes residents with a spectacular view of downtown and the mountains beyond. Choklit Park's playground is considered to be one of the best in the city.
