Sunset,
located on the city's sunny southern slope, is one of 23 communities
in Vancouver. It stretches from Ontario to Knight Street, and
from 41st Avenue to the North Arm of the Fraser River. These
boundaries are defined by the city for planning and administrative purposes.
On the city's
southern slopes, Sunset overlooks the Fraser River. It is home
to the Punjabi market shopping district on Main Street and a well-established,
single-family oriented community.
Except for
a few patches of pre-1930s housing, the majority of Sunset's housing
stock was built after 1945. Many residents (south of 59th Avenue) enjoy south
views of the Fraser River.
All residents
are within a comfortable walk (800 metres) of one of the community's six
parks. Sunset has 0.82 hectares for every 1,000 residents as compared
to the city average of 1.12.
Memorial
Park South located at 41st Avenue & Prince Albert Street.
This park was named as a memorial to the soldiers of World War 1. Sports
enthusiasts from across South Vancouver are drawn to Sunset's
largest park for its tennis courts, running track and variety of field sports,
everything from rugby, soccer and grass hockey to cricket, baseball and softball.
Residents also enjoy Memorial for quieter pursuits such as picnicking,
"fresh air" checkers and walking.
Moberly
Park located at 59th Avenue & Prince Albert Street.
This park has a community hall and fieldhouse and is popular for baseball,
soccer and tennis. Ross Park located at 57th Avenue and Ross Street.
A busy park for field sports such as baseball, football and soccer, Ross
Park also has a fieldhouse and children's playground.
Sunset Park
located a t 51st Avenue & Prince Edward Street.
This is the Site of the Sunset Memorial Community Centre and Ice Rink.
The park also has an outdoor pool and children's playground. Sunset Park
is home to the City of Vancouver's Sunset Nursery which supplies all
plant materials for city parks. City work crews tending all parks and trees
in the south and east of the city are based at the Nursery. The Nursery holds
a sale of uncommon annuals -- a new single black hollyhock and a cherry-coloured
salvia are just two examples - at Van Dusen Gardens late in May.
