The
amalgamated neighbourhoods of Renfrew and Collingwood
are bounded by Broadway and the Lougheed Highway on the
north, Nanaimo to the west, 41st Avenue and Kingsway
on the south and Boundary Road to the east. The larger neighbourhood
is actually made up of a number of smaller communities and locales that
are seen as distinct and separate by their residents. These boundaries
are defined by the city for planning purposes and may not accurately
reflect smaller historical neighbourhoods.
Renfrew-Collingwood
is a family-oriented community on the slopes of east Vancouver. In
addition to its three SkyTrain stations, the area is criss-crossed
by major streets and dotted with shopping and commercial areas.
People of
Renfrew-Collingwood
Renfrew-Collingwood's population has expanded. Along with this growth
came changes to the community mix. In the 1980s three trends emerged in this
community which has traditionally attracted large numbers of families.
Changes in
the community's composition affect the demand for housing, health care and
community facilities such as schools, recreation centres and parks.
Approximately
80% of Renfrew-Collingwood's land area is developed for residential
uses. It is a family-oriented community with the second highest proportion
of single-family dwellings in the city after Dunbar-Southlands.
Parks
Thirty hectares of park land are distributed throughout Renfrew-Collingwood,
with most residents only a few blocks from one of the area's 12 parks. There
are 0.87 hectares for every 1,000 residents in the area. The city average
is 1.12 hectares per 1,000 persons.
While parks
are evenly distributed throughout the community, convenient access to them
by children and the elderly often requires crossing the area's busy street
system. The community will gain up to three hectares of additional park space
when the improvements around Joyce/Vanness area are complete.
