General Overview

  • Population of approximately 23,695
  • Map of East/West Vancouver

BC, Lower MainlandMount Pleasant is one of 23 communities in Vancouver covering Cambie to Clark Drive, and from Great Northern Way and 2nd Avenue to 16th Avenue and Kingsway. These boundaries are defined by the city for planning and administrative purposes and may not accurately reflect smaller historical neighbourhoods. It is located adjacent to the downtown core, the most diverse community in the city.

Named "Mount Pleasant" in 1888, its proximity to Vancouver town site and the availability of a quality water supply (Brewery Creek) made the area an ideal place for early industry and settlement. Early expectations were that Mount Pleasant would develop as Vancouver's fashionable "uptown."

Over half of Mount Pleasant's land area is residential. Historical and recent development produced three distinct neighbourhoods containing a wide variety of housing types, suitable for a range of incomes and household types. West Mount Pleasant, south of Broadway between Ontario and Yukon Streets, is characterized by its heritage housing stock, much of it dating back to the turn of the century.

Mount Pleasant North, located north of Broadway between Main Street and Clark Drive, is an apartment area, with most buildings developed in the 1960s and 1970s. This period also saw the conversion of many of the area's single family homes into multi-unit rental accommodation. The third residential area, bounded by Broadway, Kingsway, Clark and Knight, has a mix of older heritage-quality houses and post-war housing. Apartment uses also occur adjacent to Main Street, from 10th to 16th Avenues.

    People of Mount Pleasant
Since 1971, Mount Pleasant's population has increased by 8.6%, similar to the citywide average of 8.4% growth. In addition to this population growth, the community mix has also changed. Changes in the age composition of the community affect the demand for housing, health care and community facilities such as schools, recreation centres and parks.

Ten hectares of parkland are distributed throughout Mount Pleasant with most residents only a few blocks from one of the area's eight parks. Mount Pleasant has 0.43 hectares of parkland per 1,000 persons as compared to the city average of 1.12 hectares per 1,000 persons. While the community's parks are evenly distributed throughout the area, convenient access to them is affected by the area's busy arterial routes. A pedestrian walkway system was recently implemented to increase access throughout the area.

Mount Pleasant Community Park located at 16th Avenue and Ontario Street. China Creek North/South located at 6th and 11th Avenues, Keith and Glen Streets, Jonathan Rogers located at 7th and 8th Avenues, Columbia to Manitoba Streets, Robson Park located at 15th Avenue and Kingsway.
