General Overview
The COMOX VALLEY stretches from the oyster beaches of Fanny Bay in the South to the white sandy beaches of Saratoga Beach in the North, and includes the centres of Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland, as well as the quiet and quaint Hornby and Denman Islands off the Valley's coast. These Islands, home to many distinguished artists, beckon visitors with their distinctive character and beauty. The COMOX VALLEY is a perfect central location from which to explore all of Vancouver Island. Municipal growth rates for the Comox Valley have also averaged about 6% per annum from 1986 to 199 1. It boomed in 1993/94/95 (see opening paragraph). Although this is recognized as an attractive retirement area, its proportion of seniors is only 4% higher than the provincial average. In contrast with the Parksville/Qualicum area almost 80% of in-migrants to the region since 1989 have been less than 45 years old. Bruce Turner: "It can be expected that the 35 - 54 year age group will be the major target group for home builders in the Comox Valley for the next decade, while Parksville/Qualicum builders will mainly target the 45 - 64 year age group."
Comox is well served by a modern new highway south to Nanaimo and Victoria, and the older Island Highway north to the logging, mining and fishing communities of Campbell River, Port Hardy and Port McNeil. There is a ferry to Powell River on the Canadian Mainland, and as many as eight scheduled flights daily to the City of Vancouver and island destinations. BC Transit operates a local bus service within the Comox Valley. Amenities located within the town include a number of marinas for commercial, sports fishing boats, and pleasure craft including a large number of sailboats. You will also find a well equipped volunteer fire department and commercial airport in Comox. A 9 hole golf course, modern community centre, library, the largest hospital north of Nanaimo which included extended care and psychiatric wings, and 125 hectares of parks, playing fields and reserves also service the needs of the community. Education is provided in four elementary, one junior high and one senior high school. There are also three proposed sites for junior and elementary schools. North Island College, which provides equivalency, Diploma and university transfer courses together with a wealth of leisure programs is also located in the Comox Valley. Related
