General Overview

  • Population of approximately 29,617 (2003)
  • Vancouver IslandBC, Vancouver Island

Located at the mid point on Vancouver Island, Campbell River is a natural distribution centre as well as gateway destination for northern coastal regions. With a growing trend to ecotravel tours Campbell River is ideally located to service the Desolation Sound traffic and the popular Queen Charlotte Islands. Campbell River is also on the cruise ship route to Alaska. The Campbell River municipal airport is a mere 20 minutes from the heart of downtown and is a busy hub of activity. Charters come regularly from Vancouver and Seattle bringing international celebrities to its famed fishing. Regular flights carry business people back and forth on a daily basis while flights leaving for destinations north, transport supplies and people to a myriad of northern communities and activities.

CAMPBELL RIVER, international recognition as the "Salmon Capital of the World" dates back to 1896 when journalist Sir Richard Musgrave first detailed his accounts of the mighty Tyee (Chinook) he landed at the mouth of the Campbell in a London journal. Today, this vibrant community located on Discovery Passage still attracts its share of international angling attention but increasingly, the numbers mount for those in search of ecotourism pursuits in the surrounding Strathcona Park and Discovery Islands region.

A variety of charters and adventures depart from Campbell River daily and include: salmon charters, zodiac Tours to Desolation Sound, old growth walking tours of Strathcona Provincial Park, snorkeling tours with the salmon and seals, sea kayaking and bear/bird Watching tours on both Vancouver Island and the mainland coast.

The community has numerous walking trails throughout that take advantage of its' oceanside location including the Rotary Beach Walk, Foreshore Park, Banner Walk, and Campbell River Trail.

Moments away a 12 minute ferry ride connects you to Quadra Island, largest of the Discovery Islands and home to the Kwagiulth Museum and Rebecca Spit Provincial Park. The island also contains numerous lodges and the southern end is noted for ancient petroglyghs. Cortes Island is reached by a further ferry connection and is home to Smelt Bay Provincial Park and the white sandy beaches of Hague Lake. The island also neighbours world famous Desolation Sound Marine Park.

Consider the Campbell River estuary. Thanks to economic diversification, it's attracting a good quality and quantity of people. Campbell River has better opportunities than the Courtenay area. It has a much younger population and better appreciation prospect. Comparable units rent for perhaps $ 100 a month more in Campbell River than in Courtenay. While both spots have experienced overbuild problems, particularly in the condo sector, and are now experiencing some fire-sale rental (see spotlight on each area), both areas look good longer-term with Campbell River looking just a little bit better.
