The City of Burnaby provides an ideal location for continued residential, commercial and industrial growth. Some 173,197 people live here, 83,000 work here. They have an average personal income of $26,070, pay on average $737 for a 2 bedroom apartment in rent, and in only 15 minutes by car or rapid transit they can be in downtown Vancouver.
Burnaby is second only to the City of Vancouver as a centre of employment and output in British Columbia.
Burnaby has a corridor position between the cities of Vancouver to the west and north, and Coquitlam and New Westminster to the east.
Before the advent of settlers in the late 1800's, the area now known as Burnaby was a land of tall trees and wilderness. The earliest pioneers settled around 1850 and Burnaby developed very slowly until 1887, when the Canadian Pacific was extended into Vancouver from the Port Moody terminal. Due to the dramatic increase in traffic between New Westminster and Vancouver, a tram line connecting the two centres through Burnaby was built.
The municipality received its charter of incorporation on September 24, 1892. It was named after Robert Burnaby who had explored the region around Burnaby Lake in 1859.
Its economic base has changed from logging and agriculture to service, commercial and industrial activities.
Community, business and personal service industries account for approximately 27 per cent of the employment in Burnaby. This reflects Burnaby's growing role as an urban centre.
Burnaby is home to two post secondary institutions.
Simon Fraser University is one of two top rated Canadian universities in Canada Region and BCIT is the province's top College.
It also has Discovery Place, Vancouver's premier high tech business park where companies such as CREO Products Inc, Clearnet Inc., Open Learning Agency, MDS Metro Laboratory Services, Electronic Arts (Canada) Inc., to name a few.
While it is a growing urban centre, Burnaby has a couple of lakes. Deer Lake, a lake that spans approximately 10 kilometers wide and Burnaby Lake.
