Abbotsford is the regional centre of the Fraser Valley and provides a wide variety of retail, recreational and government services. The city is bordered by Langley to the west, Chilliwack to the east, Washington state to the south and the Fraser River to the north.
Abbotsford was founded over I00 years ago and has a strong agricultural base. The manufacturing sector is diversified and offers everything from aircraft manufacturing to wooden gift items. There are more than 250 local manufacturers.
There are two major malls in the Clearbrook area anchor a strong retail sector and attract customers from all over the Fraser Valley. In addition, neighbourhood shopping areas provide opportunities to find unique products.
The Abbotsford Airport is also home to the Abbotsford International Airshow, which takes place the second week in August each year, and Airshow Canada, North America's premier aviation show. The trade show is held in conjunction with the flying show every second year.
Other annual events include The Central Fraser Valley Agricultural Fair which takes place on the first weekend in August, B.C. Day weekend, and draws crowds from throughout the province and Washington state.
This family-oriented community has a skating rink, recreation centres and a multitude of sports leagues for all age groups. Educational opportunities are available from kindergarten to the university level. The University College of Fraser Valley offers four-year degree programs as well as two-year diploma courses and vocational offerings. The Career Technical Centre provides high school students with the opportunities to combine graduation requirements with technology courses equivalent to the first year of college.
